The Carver Theatre Department is thrilled to announce a remarkable milestone for two of our talented students. Senior Sannia Bell and sophomore Johnny Kelly have been granted the opportunity of a lifetime—their first professional acting roles at The Ensemble Theatre, a cornerstone of Houston’s rich cultural heritage.
Founded nearly half a century ago, The Ensemble Theatre stands as the oldest and largest Black-owned theatre in the South, a beacon of artistic excellence and empowerment. As the company approaches its 50th anniversary in 2026, its stage continues to shine with stories that celebrate identity, resilience, and the human spirit.
In the theatre’s 49th season opener, Akeelah and the Bee—written by Cheryl L. West, based on the screenplay by Doug Atchison, and directed by Eileen J. Morris—Sannia and Johnny brought dynamic energy to the production. Sannia showcased her versatility by portraying multiple characters: Trish, Mohawk Girl, and Horse Girl, while Johnny delivered compelling performances as both Javier and Chucky.
Akeelah and the Bee tells the inspiring story of a young African-American girl whose extraordinary gift for spelling becomes a gateway to self-discovery. With the unwavering support of her family and a devoted mentor, Akeelah’s journey to the National Spelling Bee becomes a powerful testament to perseverance and hope.
The production ran from September 19 to October 12, 2025, marking not only a significant moment for The Ensemble Theatre’s legacy but also an unforgettable debut for two rising stars from the Carver Theatre family.
